Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:Can you please tell me if Dettol is safe to use on dogs?
A:NO! Not even when it is very dilute - it can be very corrosive to a dog's skin.

Q:I have a 3 year old Australian Kelpie who has a very bad wind problem. I think he has had it on and off for most of his life… I remember when he was only a pup and we went to have him microchipped and he passed wind, and it was so bad – It smelt like methane gas and still does. I have tried almost every dog food known to man to try and combat the problem but nothing seems to be working. I recently emailed a Kelpie breeder in hope they could shed some light. But they told me I am doing the right things and to maybe try charcoal tablets – We have bought charcoal tablets for him and fix it with his dry kibble. But if he were to pass wind we can still smell him from across the room. I don’t know what to do I am out of options and I am worried about him. Other then the wind problem he is a healthy strong brute of a dog his teeth and gums are in good health and he has the most amazing black shiny coat and he is a dog who loves life and loves his family. I need you help.. Please Help my boy. We all love him to pieces.
A:I sent you an email and hope you received this - to let you know we have covered this very question recently. Thanks

Q:My dog is itching her ear constantly. This has begun since I washed her 2 days ago. what can I do to help her??
A:Tt sounds like your dog most likely has an ear canal infection. It really needs to be seen by a vet to confirm this and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Q:My 9 week old border collie puppy keeps eating small stones and chewing large ones - how can I stop him?
A:Chewing on all sorts of things is fairly normal for a puppy and it is their way of exploring things (and it helps with teething, like babies). Because it is a normal behavioural thing to do, it is not easy to put a stop to. However it is important to stop because if he/she swallows a stone or other such object, it may become trapped in the stomach/intestines which would require major surgery to remove. Things like providing plenty of chewy toys/bones/an old pair of slippers Etc will hopefully divert his attention from chewing stones. Can you somehow remove the offending items or prevent him from getting access to them? The chewing of odds and sods will settle with time, but until that occurs you have to be very vigilant.

Q:my dog is 15 years old. he is a cross australian terrier and chiuaua. he is not moving much and is vomiting a lot. he finds it difficult breathing at times. how can i help him.
A:You need to take your dog to the vet.
