Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:My 12 year old mini foxy is a fussy eater. I am having trouble buying her favorite dry food which contains sea food, Can I use a dry adult cat food with fish instead. Failing this could I mix fish oil with her dry food or add sardines packaged for humans to trick her into eating other dry dog food. She has had her teeth cleaned so gingivitis is not a problem at present. Thanks for your advice.
A:The best option would be to try her with the tuna or sardines or fishoil mixed onto the dog food. Or even try mixing a bit of gravy over the food - that sometimes gets dogs to eat bland food. Feeding a dog on cat food is ok short term but obviously not a long term option.

Q:Our dog gave birth to a pup with no nose. Can it be hand reared?
A:You need to get the pup seen to by a vet.

Q:When my 20 week old border collie pup is on pavement and he starts running on it he wears down his one nail on each foot to the point wear he makes it bleeds and I take him to the vet and they say nothing is wrong but I am concerned that he is missing something in the system cause I have another collie that is 20 months and he is fine PLEASE HELP
A:It could possibly be a foot or nail conformation problem that is leading to this problem however without seeing it I cannot comment too far. Maybe the nails just need to be clipped short if possible. If the problem is continuing I would recommend another check up by your vet or get a second opinion from another vet if you are not happy with the 1st vet.

Q:My Maltese has got yeast and a little sore on him. What is best to use?
A:I am assuming the question is relating to a skin infection. If that is the case there are a variety of things ranging from creams, tablets and shampoos that could be used to treat such infections. Which one, or combination of, these that could be used would depend on the severity and duration of the problem. That would be best determined by a veterinary examination.

Q:Our 13 year old dog is constipated. Do we need to see a vet?
A:Yes constipated dogs really need to be seen by a vet to alleviate the constipation, but to also identify and hopefully treat the underlying cause for the constipation.
