Vet Advice

Glen Kolenc has been a practising vet for just over 10 years. After working in several veterinary hospitals in Sydney along with a four year working holiday in the UK, he now owns the Petersham Veterinary Hospital in Sydney's Inner West, along with its onsite boarding cattery. Glen's love of animals stems back to his childhood, which prompted him to study veterinary science at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 1997 with honours, he has spent over a decade doing "the most rewarding job in the world".

Glen is our resident Internet Vet here at Dogs and Cats and would like to remind visitors asking him questions that some medical problems can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A certain set of symptoms may be caused by several possible ailments. Therefore nothing can replace a veterinarian obtaining a full history, and performing a thorough examination of your pet. This Q + A segment though does allow for more general queries to be addressed.

Q:I found my 8 month old cat dead, with blood coming from its mouth and nose with its eyes still open and tongue hanging out. What do you think could have caused this?
A:The 2 most likely causes could be that your cat was hit by a car (or suffered another similar trauma), or ingested ratbait which will cause bleeding from potentially anywhere in the body.

Q:My cat is way too fat! I have had her for 9 months. She was fat when she was givnen to me. I thought it would be easy to help her lose weight. But all she does is sit around all day. I got a kitten for her to play with, but they don't get along well. And she still just sits all day. She only eats one bowl of hard 9 lives cat food each day. Do you have any suggestions?
A:I would recommend that you seek veterinary advice, where a strict diet can be formulated. There are very good prescription diets available aimed specifically at weight loss in cats and dogs.

Q:How old do kittens need to be before I can give them away?
A:They should be 8 weeks of age at the very minimum (preferably 10-12 weeks), AFTER you have had them vaccinated and microchipped.

Q:My male Doberman is a water
A:I couldn't really comment on this without seeing the dog myself, other than to say if you aren't happy with your dog's progress you should take him back to the vet for another examination.

Q:1 have an 11 week-old pup that has had 1 vaccination, has been flead and wormed. The dog was stepped on by a 10 year old and since then the dog is lifeless, will not walk around has an ear infection and its eyes since being at a vet hospital have turned black.
A:All I can say is this dog needs to go to a back to the vet.
